The business side of the transaction should perhaps not be pressed too hard; but undoubtedly the legal basis of marriage among the Santals as among very many other people both nowadays and formerly is the ownership of the husband (or of the family of the husband) in a woman. [...] At a janam Maio the officiating midwife tells the assembled people the name of the newborn child ; here she does not tell the name of the boy but the sept or subsept of the adopting father hencforth the sept of the boy. [...] Similarly the ancestor of the Gen3a clan is said to have been born under the wings of a Gereid bird and the ancestor of the Lupung clan under the shade of a /iping tree. [...] Thus the Liidambi clan place a tialinabci flower before the sacrificer; the Milriim clan place a bit of a horn or skin of the mirim (ni!gli i) ; the Kendua clan place a twig of the Keond (Diospyros melanoxylon) tree ; the Geri% clan place &'c ing of the gerOci bird ; the Andi clan place a bit of the skin of the Andi (wild cat) ; the Chauli Hembnim clan place a handful of dna rice and also a hive [...] and Marima clans are generally found associated together ; the &Lurid clan is usually associated with the Ladämbit clan ; the Here HembrOm with either the Gidhi or the Bhilivrt clan; the Chilli Hemrim with either the Nagpuria or the INI5hali or the Maghtria Hembrtim clan; the Singpuria with the Nagpuria clan; and the Dt.115.
