The success of the continuation school depends in large measure on the spirit of the day school through which the children have passed There are many who think that the present course of study in our elementary schools is over the heads of a considerable number of the children. [...] Let us first observe that the question is not one of the growth of a Literature but of a language The relation of the two is obscure ; though growth in the one direction usually accompanies growth in the other it does not always do so. [...] At least twice the number of the present lessons methodically arranged was necessary and the subject should have been treated either in the beginning of the second book or at least towards the close of the book under review. [...] The heading of lesson 22 is a proverb which is beyond the capacity of the stage and lesson 3o ought to occur towards the close of the book. [...] In one of the poetry lessons the writer uselessly inserts the name of the poet who has contributed the piece.
