Half the committee has been nominated by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford and the other half by the Executive of the Workers' Educational Association. [...] The first inspetion is to take place at the time of or as soon as possible after admission to the school ; the second is to take place about the end of the third year of school life ; and the third is to follow at about the sixth year of school life viz. [...] THE system of Education which guided the destinies of China from the earliest days of civilisation to the aftermath of the Boxer uprising may be described as The Iron Bond of the Classics." From entering the school as a boy of six or seven to the time when he gained his eternal rest the scholar of this part of the Far East did little except learn how to write correctly to cultivate a good styl [...] Confucius said "Follow the seasons (almanac) of the Hsid (Dynasty); ride in the state carriage of the Yin; wear the ceremonial cap of the Chour; have the music and pantomimes of the Shao; banish the songs of Chin." Above all he was a good man and never sacrificed duty to pleasure. [...] Criticising this position I seem to find (i) It is very trying for the eyes the line of writing being as it were a prolongation of the axis of the eyes ; so that the distances of the eyes from the point of observation are unequal.
