Is the State to control in the interests of the nation the upbringing of the whole of the rising generation ?-If so is it to have in education as complete a monopoly as in the Post Office? [...] up and representing the action of all the different groups in the community but thwarting the action of some of them in matters of profound moral and intellectual significance ? Thus to thwart the purpose of some groups of the community may be a political necessity from the point of view of an existing State but in that case the State has been compelled virtually to fight for its own existence. [...] That is the aspect of the matter from the point of view of the individual's own interest: education helps him to make the very best of himself and his talents and as the state is made of the individual members who compose it and is consequently merely the exhibition of the psychological characteristics of human nature on a greater scale what is best for the individual is also best for the whole [...] Thus the external aspect of the matter—the administration and organisation of an educational system—and the internal aspect—the choice of studies and pursuitsPLATO AND EDUCATIONAL CO-ORDINATION—II 447 nside the school—are at bottom one and the same problem namely the problem of doing justice of giving as Aristotle would say the tight training to the right persons at the right time and in [...] The education of girls almost the only feature in the educational system the improvement of which is not chiefly a question of money is spreadiag more rapidly than before though it is still confined to a very small fraction of the population The demand for it is now found to be increasing and the difficulty in meeting this demand lies in the want of qualified teachers.
