A supply of medical record cards is forwarded to the Head Teacher at the same time and the latter is asked to place on the cards the name and address of each child the date of birth and the name of the school. [...] In some cases she examines the children under the doctor's supervision in regard to cleanliness and conditions of the skin; makes a preliminary test of vision; takes their weights and measurements; obtains from the parents particulars in regard to the family history and details of previous illness; and enters from the doctor's dictation the results of the examination on the medical record cards. [...] The degradation of woman from her recognised position of authority and dignity to a state of mental and moral stagnation from her position as the centre and focus of domestic bliss as the partner and equal of her husband to that of a mere nonentity is the most unfortunate event in the history of India. [...] The home and the school are the two great forces which influence and mould the characters of children and under ordinary conditions the school is supposed to carry on more systematically a-.d thoroughly the work of training begun at home ; in India however the task of educating children devolves entirely upon the school which has to counteract the evils of environment and social customs. [...] At present however examinations exercise an irresistible influence on the minds of parents teachers and pupils ; the grants given to schools the promotions and prospects of teachers depend on the number of "passes " while parents gauge the ability of teachers and the efficiency of the school from the marks and prizes obtained by their daughters !
