Indian Education

1915

The results of education of this kind would be the supply of a large number of intelligent boys who in the workshop would rapidly become intelligent and skilled workers ready and able to adapt theselves to the changing working conditions of the trade and of the times. [...] The ideal way of training the rising generation of skilled workmen for the nation is to have during the four years after the elementary school course half the boy's time in the workshop and half in the technical school. [...] The object at present is to indicate the spirit of the worker with the business view the kind of institution with the nature of the service and the improved conditions under which it is possible to make life useful and happy. [...] But if the element of idealism arising from the notion of virtue or the reason now given is not the only one if the realities of the world from the Standpoint of business are to be reckoned he who enters on a field of activity does well to reflect on the kind of institution to serve in. [...] The conditions of sanitary large compounds for sports and games to the teacher and the taught necessary for developing character and of open air all around the existence of a number of colleges in the same locality so as to need the presence of a great many of the most distinguished men are the requisites wherein the youth of highest talents can find his work most profitably directed.
