Sir Moses Montefiore the distinguished Jewish philanthropist carried on his works of beneficence almost to the time of his death at the great age of one hundred and one and made the last of his seven notable journeys to the Orient in the interest of the Jewish people when he was nearly ninety. [...] The letters on the whole go to support the accepted opinion as to the greatness of Dalhousie but on the other hand they do little or nothing -to modify the view that the policy of annexation which he adopted from the outset was charged with peril to the British power.
