Modern Review June 1934

1934

The Afoghnl Empire was in the grip of decay ; the Mahrattns and Sikhs were busy untying the knots of the Empire ; in the hands of the English it was reduced to shreds and to final destruction. [...] But to perptuate itself it has not chosen the path of the Tsars namely the subduing of the people's mind by ignorance and religious superstition ; the impairing of their manliness by the lash of the Cossacks. [...] I pray for the victory of the coperative principle in the production and contro: of the wealth of our villages for it recognizes human nature in not scorning the desire and opinion of the co-operators. [...] In comparison with all the glories of the town the resources of the villages are so poor that the hearts of the villagers are not unnaturally constantly drawn towards the town. [...] If the instruction imparted at the village schools is to be sounder and more lasting the project method may well be resorted to with a view to linking the lessons of the class-moms to the everyday experiences of the children's life.
