The excellent character of this new Journal and the high standard of articles published in it and the enterprise and devotion of the group of the Bengali scholars seem to make Indian Culture rightly and completely fill the great void created by the unfortunate discontinuance of the great epoch-making Journal the Indian Antiquary. [...] The present book is one of the more extensive writings of the author and goes to illustrate his special strength in Indian historical researches namely a most conscientious:and painstaking accumulation of the data which go to elucidate the progress of the country in the different fields of culture. [...] The result is the presentation in a volume of limited extent of a comprehensive picture of ancient Indian life as lived both in the palaces of the rich and hamlets of the poor.
