The excellent character of this new Journal and the high standard of articles published in it and the enterprise and devotion of the group of the Bengali scholars seem to make Indian Culture rightly and completely fill the great void created by the unfortunate discontinuance of the great epoch-making Journal the Indian Antiquary. [...] According to the Aupapatika Sdtra the destiny of worldly men is Vdnamantara that of the vdnaprastha tdpasas is the world of the jyoksi gods that of the parivrajakas is brahmaloka and that of the ajivikas is acyutapada (secs. [...] According to the Buddhist commentator Buddhaghosa brahmaloka is the goal of the Brahmanas dbhassaraloka is that of the tapasas subhakinnaloka is that of the parivrajakas and anantamdnasa is that of the djivikas. [...] That the Jainas were out to excel the Brahmins the Buddhists and the rest in the art of poetical and laboured exaggerations is particularly noticeable in the enumeration and description of the physical characteristics of Mahavira as a great man the characteristics that are said to be 8 000 in number in place of 32 only of the Buddhist tradition (atthsahassa-varapurisalakkhanadhare). [...] But the date of Lalitaditya Muktapida as it is in my chronology comes into conflict with the evidence of the Chinese Annals of the T'ang dynasty which record that ' after the first Chinese expedition in the country of Po-liu (Baltistan) in the neighbourhood of Kashmir (between 736 and 747) the King Mou-to-pi (Muktapicla) sent the ambassador Ou-li-lo carrying a missive to the court of China (d
