The Tropical Agriculturist. The Agricultural Journal of Ceylon February 1932

1932

The study of the influence of.other living organisms and their physiological products excretions and secretions in the raising of commecial crops is one aspect of the work of the biologist. [...] Although vigna is not attacked by the fungus the moist condtions prevailing under the cover produced by the plant favour the activity of the fungus while the older runners of the plani act as convenient footholds for the strands of mycelium which pass along them. [...] Naturally when the disease is transferred by a leaflet the mycelium is superficial on the tea leaf from the beginning of formation of the spot." The disease Occurs only in the areas of tea which are subject to conditions of high humidity and particularly in those areas where mists are prevalent. [...] The general effect of the root infesttion is the lowering of the vitality of the trees and the consequent increase in susceptibility to fungus attack and to unfavourable conditions. [...] Only the most thorough measures invoving the removal of all diseased roots and infected material will prevent the spread of the disease and it is emphasised that the treatment which eradicates the disease once and for all from any particular area is the cheapest in the long run.
