The nearest approach to the rend?ina group of limestone soils are the grey soils of the Island of Kayts containing a reserve of free calcium carbonate in the shape of limestone concretions and other marine deposits. [...] The illustration accompanying this paper will give an idea of the nature of the vegetation and the topography of an outcrop of sedimentary limestone in the Jaffna Peninsula. [...] The points at issue on which information is desired are the behaviour of the various rootstocks after budding under local conditions of soil and climate their resistance to disease the respective vigour of growth of the plant combination the age of fruiting and the quality and quantity of fruit eventually produced from these budded trees. [...] The year 1933 was a lean one both for output of budded plants and in the production of material for budding and grafting purposes.90 The report gives the reasons and states that propagation in the nurseries received a setback on the arrivid of the floods in May and again in early September. [...] On the subsidence of the flood a layer of from 1 to 5 feet of sand was found to be deposited over the greater portion of the area of the new nursery and months of work were necessitated in clearing the inner terrace.
