It follows that in the present stage of the country's development the proper approach to the problem of the better nutrition of the people doel not lie in scientific doctrines regarding the balanced diet " or " the ideal diet " but in the increase of the purchasing power of the people. [...] With a financial system in which the amount of money released by the exchange banks for circulation in the country is detemined by what the producer of export goods is prepared to spend on the purchase of locally made commodities this increase in the purchasing power of the poorer classes can be brought about only by the partial industrialization of the country and by such fiscal manipulation [...] The most striking facts disclosed by these figures are the very high protein and fat value of the Soybean the acclimatization of which to the conditions of this country the Department of Agriculture has now in hand and the poor percentage of minerals in Spinach which is contrary to common belief. [...] (Cantab.) CHEMIST THE question of the food of the people of Ceylon has been engaging the serious attention of Government during recent years more so as the malaria epidemic brought forcibly home the poor stamina and lack of resistance to disease of a large section of the rural population due to ilnourishment or faulty nutrition. [...] In this article which is the first of the series the nature and scope of the work are described and the results obtained briefly summarized.
