The riddle of the universe and the position of man both in relation to the object of the senses and the power beyond the whencfont why and whither of man and the means whereby the veil behind mundane existence din be lifted have exercised a deep.fascination over the Indian mind. [...] The faint glimmerings of endeavour to gras p the divine essence or the ultimate reality of things appear in the Vedas but it is in the later Puranas and in the devotio nal songs of the saints that we find the yearning to enjoy the blessedness of actual communion with the Highest. [...] SOURCES OF HISTORY THE one difference between the history of England and that of India is that the one is a story of the growth of the people while the other is the story of the monarchs the sujects playing a minor part in the affairs of the nation. [...] Following the footsteps of those writers we should better understand in the first place the economic condition of the people of India at the beginning of the seventeenth century : and then in order to have a working idea of the East India trade we would briefly survey the history of the activities from the establishment of the East India Company to the passing of the Act of Parliament in 1700. [...] Shahjehan to redress his grievance with the result that the Emperor ordered the widow to pay half the amount to the king's treasury and the other half to the son.* This incident apart from its effects on the widow or her son furnishes us with an exaple 'of the custom of the times of taking back into the treasury of the Crown all the wealth of a nobleman after his demise.
