The Indian Review July 1929 A Monthly Periodical Devoted to the Discussion of All Topics of Interest

1929

The survey includes chapters on the history of England and France in IndChina and of the United States in the Phillippines and concludes with a review of the history of Oriental emigration to America and of the treatment of Orientals there. [...] The Imperial Bank the pnemier banking house in India is the outcome of an important develoment in Indian Banking ; it was formed in 1921 as the result of an amalgamation of the three Presidency Banks the Bank of Bengal the Bank of Madras and the Bank of Bombay. [...] The fact that the Government of India extracted a promise from the Imperial Bank at the time of its formation to open a hundred new branches within five years from its commencement and the introduction of Post Office Cash Certifcates for the benefits of small depositors are sufficient to show the measures taken by the Government to expand the banking and the investment facilities in the country [...] Raina may ba sound student of economics and even of the theory of co-operation—his book for instance contains a very learned disquisition on the defintion of co-operation—but his acquaintance with and study of co-operation in India does not in the reviewer's opinion bear out the claim made by the publishers of the book that the author has mastered the principles of the Co-operative Movem [...] And what have these races to pit against this alliance between the White settlers and the Colonial Office ? Indians have the support of the Indian Government ! But the Indians are the step-sons of the Indian Government while the White settlers of East Africa are the own sons of the Colonial Office which office again is not going to bow its head to the India Office.
