The Indian Review October 1929 A Monthly Periodical Devoted to the Discussion of All Topics of Interest

1929

The Indian community was diappointed by the weakness of the majority recommendation that the consent of the European community should be obtained for adopting the civilization franchise outlined in the report for a basis of the electoral system in the colony. [...] One of the most notable instances of the universal approbation of Byramjee's meritorious services was an illuminated address from the Nawab of Sachin testifing to the gratitude of all the communities of the Presidency to the retired Councillor for voicing the sentiments and feelings of the people in the Council with great ability tact and independence. [...] Now the outbreak of present hostilities between the Muslims and the Jews is directly due to the aggressive policy which despite all the professions and protestations of strict neutrality on the part of the Mandatory Power seeks to aggran-dize one community at the expense of the other. [...] The direct and immediate course of the troubles in Palestine is described by the PIONEER'S Correspondent at Jerusalem in the following words :- While the fundamental cause is the Balfour Declaration which permitted the Jews to make in Palestine a national home and which the Arabs have regarded and will always regard as a threat to their future the direct cause of the outbreak is the Wailing Wall [...] The adventures of Udayana have furnished the theme for many a Sanskrit work and the place which they have gained in Indian literature is next in importance only to that of the achievments of the heroes of the two great Epics-- the Ramayana and the Maha-Bharata.
