The abyss of seven centuries was thus bridged in a single year by the will of our people ! The old days came back again from the cave of the ditant past and were modified in certain ways by the genius of the present. [...] We still talk of the ways of the Imperial Ancestors as we did in the past We still go to the Temple of the Sun-Goddess (from whom the Mikado is said to have descended) to declare war against the enemies of our Empire. [...] Sorest point of all he had practcally to acquiesce in the rejection of the name of Christian by his followers to whom the word implied a possibility of brotherhood with outcasts and the substitution therefore of the colourless appellation followers of the holy law " Such a state of things could not continue. [...] But this policy is but a makeshift ; the provision made for the doubts of the West is superfluous or unnecessary in the East and the West did not anticipate the difficulties of the East. [...] But the claim of A to precede B on the score of caste position is not recognised by the authorities of the Church and claims to obtrude caste considerations into the discipline or working of the Church are net considered.
