It will be noted that the velocity of reaction increases with increase in the rate of shaking which facilitates the interchange of oxygen between the liquid and the gas phase. [...] The oxidation of organic cubstances by oxygen with the aid of enzymes or inorganic catalysts has been pictured by Wieland as cosisting of a preliminary process of dehydrogenation followed by the formation of hydrogen peroxide; and in some recent work of his school cerous hydroxide in small quantities has been used for detecing the formation of hydrogen peroxide during the processes of enzym [...] The nature of the catalytic surfaces changes as more and more of cerous hydroxide is converted into eerie hydroperoxide which is not capable of effecting the priliminary dehydrogenation of the substrate. [...] Thereafter we meet with a steady rate for the absorption of oxygen which is the difference between the rate of absorption of oxygen to form hydrogen peroxide and the rate of decomposition of eerie hydroperoxide. [...] The term selectivity is given by the equation S=m (01--C2)1g where S denotes selectivity (apparent adsorption); in ' weighof the liquid mixture added to the gel; g weight of the gel inegnilibrium With the liquid ; CI ' the initial concentration of the selectively adsorbed component; Ci the equlibrium concentration of the tame coMponent VI and C2 being expressed in weight fraction'.
