1901

F. L. The revision of the article on Pterocarpus Marsupium in The Dictionary of Economic Products has been rendered necessary on account of the great interest attached to the recent fluctuation in the price of medicinal kino and its causes. [...] During the course of an extensive correspondence between the Reporter on Economic Products and members of the Forest service important additional information has been obtained with regard to the distribution of the tree and the collection and preparation of its juice for the European market. [...] Anjurakandy a village at the foot of the ghats is supposed to be the site of the factory where the first supply was prepared for the market early in the past century. [...] A bamboo tube is then fixed at the bottom of the main incision in order to catch the juice thus— In the course of about twenty-four hours the flow of the gum ceases and the bamboo is taken down. [...] Although we are unable to learn much of the consttuents of kino from these results the small amount of insoluble matter indicates a degree of purity in the commercial article at the beginning of the century equal to that of the best kino now produced.
