[...] Seizing the opportunity offered by this seemingly miraculous respite Pope Innocent IV the Father of Christendom and the first potentate of Europe sent a legate to the court of the Great Khan for the purpose of establishing diplomatic relations between the Orient and the Occident and of preparing the way for the Chritianizing of the Mongols themselves. [...] While friendlier relations were now established between the Christians of the Near East and of Europe on the one hand and the Mongols of Persia and the Far East on the other the Mameluke Sultan Bibars sought to fortify himself against the Persian Mongols by an alliance with the Khan of Kipchak his native country and the Khan of Chagatai or central Asia. [...] He manifested a keen interest in the accounts given to him by the travellers from the West ; and he had them repeatedly called into his presence that he might question them about the countries of the Occident the manners of the Europeans and especially about the religion and personality of the Supreme Pontiff.
