Thus the ground420 THE NEW REVIEW of the soul seems to be one with its uncreated ground in God and the pyschological appearance of identity conspires with the metaphysical Platonism just described to suggest an identification between God and the soul in which the latter disappears and leaves only God the Absolute One. [...] The one is the introversion which finds God in the depth of the soul the ground and in a sense the superessence of the soul in its profoundest most ultimate being. [...] And the passion calms into a contemplation of the goal which is feasible and sufficient to share the life of God Himself in the darkness of His transcendence in which He proceeds eternally from His Godhead in the Divine processions and eternally returns to it ; and the procession and the return are one. [...] There might perhaps be' some incongruity in the choice of one of the most luxurious hotels in Calcutta for a discussion of this 'Beggar Nuisance' ; but it should not blind even the socialist to the warm sympathy which prompted the most influential leaders of the presidency to offer to the Governor a draft of something like a430 THE NEW REVIEW Poor Law for Bengal. [...] So enamoured have they become of the poetry of the pavement and the open sky that the very idea of a monotonous roof over their heads and of the sickening certainty of good meals at proper times is unbearable to them and even the gentle charity of Catholic nuns is not always enough to draw them to an institution.
