The ancient Shinto was revived into the Neo-Shinto and Neo-Shinto drifted into Kodo ; the Way of the gods' turned into the Way of the Emperor' and the Emperor had to go the way of the military clans. [...] is 'indeed a remarkable prog?ess in the science of man that the deplorable confusion and vagueness in the definitions and significations of the cEncepts of race nation and even language quite common at the beginning of the 19th century have gradually been cleareetowards the end of the same century. [...] The scholastic-aristotelian conception of the soul-substance denies the mere possibility of the heredity of mental qualities because of the simplicity of the soul-substance. [...] It is perhaps more than a coincidence that the reawakning of culture after the Middle Ages began at a time when after a pericid Of centuries during which wide shittings of peoples have occurred the new fusion of the elements had begun: It is no mere chance that the Renaissance began in the North of Italy in Tuscany and the valley of the Po where the influence of t1-7e Caspian-Mediterranean [...] In the North and etpecially in the North-West of Germany much of the traditional German has survived ; in all the rest of Germany the `G;rman' is hardly to be distinguished from his Sla.vic-speaking neighbours in the East tile Swiss in the South or the Belgians or French in the West.
