The New Review January 1945

1945

[...] The invasion of Poland in agreement with Germany the annexation of the Baltic States the aggression against Finland the forcible sovietization of all the lands invaded or annexed all these facts tend to show that the 'socialism-in-one-nation' policy of Stalin can be as imperialistic as the National Socialism of Hitler. [...] This was the very agitation material which the opposition needed around which in 1670 a Republican party was organized which became the chief weapon of Lord Shaftesbury since 1673 and the subject of the defamation and terror campaign based on the denunciations of that criminal Titus Oates in 1678-79 until the whole bubble of lies exploded to the disgust of a sobered nation. [...] Both the character and the dubious antecedents of Titus Oates should have cautioned the opposition as to the probability of his revelations ; also the cross examination proved his complete ignorance of the persons and localities from whom and where he had pretended to have got his acquaintance with the plot as a repentant pupil of the Jesuits.
