By securing support—to the annexation of eastern Poland and to the principle of compensations —Stalin committed Great Britain and America to a policy which made it almost impossible for them to prevent the annexation of Poland as curtailed in the east and extended in the west—the Poland of the Fifth Partition. [...] Hence immersed in materialism the prophets of the century rest satisfied with the tangible aspects of achievement and fail to study as they do not seem to understand the meaning of failure that tomb of human progress ; the glamorous ruins of human dreams and hopes are to them but a drab heap of dust ; the blurring of the vision that infuses the contemplative mind with its inspiring passion i [...] The exigencies of time and the condtions of his weakness throw him back into the clutches of miscarriage and despondency ; the urgent spirit of desire and the intense passion for the unseen and the unknown impel him forwards towards the sunlit clouds of his hopes. [...] The story of the 'Robber King of the Forests' wielding a wild empire with his skill in archery or of the Black Knight the strongest knight who over bore a bow is eclipsed by the feats of Rama and his brother Lekshman and those of Arjun and Karna in the heroic and chivalric ages of India. [...] If there is any relic of its former iportance it is to be found in the honour paid to it on the Vijaya Dasami day in Chingom (September) by the Maharajas and also on the occasion of the Royal Hunt (Pallivetta) on the ninth night of the Utsavom in the Padmanabhaswami temple at Trivandrum.
