I make no distinction beween teacher and administrator here ; the business of both is one and the same ; it is the maintenance of the supreme tradition ; it is the prgressive revelation of the life of God in the lives of men ; it is the speech of spirit with spirit. [...] The teachers of those days believed that the atmosphere of the family and the society was detrimental to the education of the child and consequently he has removed from home at a very young age and kept away from the bustle of work-a-day life. [...] When the teacher or guru was satisfied that there was no danger of a break-down of the character of the pupil in any coflict with the conditions of his later life opposed to those of his life in the surroundings of the forest home he was given permission to return to the home of his parents and assume his social and civic responsibilities. [...] Thus the influences of the score of teachers on the pupil act and react upon one another and the pupil in nine cases out of ten emerges out of the hands of the last teacher just as he entered into those of the first—with merely the effect of the influences of the family and the social circles in which he lives and breathes. [...] A teacher is generally trained with the prime object of making him fit to the proper discharge of duties expected of him—the chief of which consist in imparting knowledge to the boys of varying ages and of different bents of mind in such a way as to make the best of them in the shortest time and with the least exertion and to make learning a kind of pleasant exercise even to those generally dis
