I understand that some of you are afraid that this gathering of yours this Session of the Conference may only be a passing show much [...] The main objects of thAssociation with its net work of affiliated district and local branches -will be the safeguarding of the interests of the Teachers the devising of ways and means for their welfare and improvement the discu- sion of matters educational the' establishment of a co-ordinated national system of education the securing of effective representation of educational interests w [...] It neither possesses the golden promise of the legal profession nor the great openings of the medical not to speak of the Eldorado to which the favoured few of fortune's pets enter through the narrow openings of the Civil Service. [...] Like the stem of a tree supported by the slender roots of elementary education on the one hand and yielding sweet fruit and fragrant (lowers of the University education on the o_her see yid try education decides the character and the strength of the educational advancement of a civilised nation. [...] It is the business of the secondary schools to cure the defects left over by the elementary schools and pass on their pupils full of vigor and energy either into the world outside to take their place as useful members of society or as scholars eager to pursue higher studies and to acid to the sum total of the knowledge of the world.
