Thus the relation between the Inspecting officer and the Assistot masters looks like the relation between the capitalist and the labourer or the landlord and the tenant of the 19th century in as much as each views the other with suspicion and jealousy. [...] the conservatism of the people the ignorance and indifference of parents the medium of a foreign language the low financial and social status of the teachers the paucity of funds both private and government and possibly a narrow outlook on life etc. [...] In any case it would be profitable for those beloning to the teaching profession to bear in mind the facts that ultimately the ideal of the New Teaching is to liberate the child from the shackles of routine work and class life that there must be genuine self-expresion of the child who must learn by his own efforts (guided of course by the teacher) and that instead of any artificial method [...] The difference be.ween the extreme advocates of direct and indirect methods is the rejection by the one and acceptance by the other of the translation method. [...] All of you can work together and you may be sure of the active cooperation of the heads of your respective institutions and the parents who form the public opinion of the town.
