The italics are ours."5'72 The Pali Vidyodara College which receives a fixed grant of Rs. [...] The review of the annual report of the Presidency College Madras for the year 1896-97 is of more than ordinary interest as owing to the preparation of the quinquennial report of the Madras Educational Department the Acting Director of Public Instruction is able to quote figures for the preceding five years. [...] The Acting Director's remark on the above table is :—` There are two features which call for comment via :—the absence of any signs of expansion during the quinquennium in respect to the total number on the rolls and secondly the fall in the strength of the college in the year under report. [...] Jeremiah Gubbins by the force of his ability and by the rules of his service rose rapidly and at the age of forty-seven was Director of the Circumlocution Department of which post he had performed the responsible duties and had drawn the large salary for the previous two years. [...] The following was the strength of the Training Section on the 31st March 1897 the figures for the previoullyear being given for the purpose of comparison:— 1896.
