In view of the fact that some propose to create degrees as the attestation of proficiency in oriental learning and that some of the greatest of scholars have spoken dubiously of the gain to be derived from long research into oriental learning it seems incumbent on those who speak with such enthusiasm of the proposed degrees and of the value of oriental studies to prove their case. [...] The University -exists for the promotion of sound learing or in the words of the act of incorporation "for the better encouragement of Her Majesty's subjects in the pursuit of a regular and liberal course of education " and ought not to take any step that will militate against the purpose of its creation. [...] Of course the diferent headings of subjects in the present syllabus include many 92720 sub-headings but it defeats the objects of a syllabus to have a minute specification of the line of study of a subject to which the syllabus relates. [...] I have however introduced the subject of the Diagrammatic representation of propositions (not merely Euler's and Lambert's but also Venn's) and also the kindred subject of the Diagrammatic representation of syllogisms. [...] The muscular system.—Relation between the degree of development of the muscular system and that of the nervous system.
