Duncan the mover of the motion in the Senate has since addressed a Memorandum on the subject both to the members of the Committee and to the heads of Affiliated Colleges. [...] What is then the solution of the problem before us ? A calm perusal of the remarks made by the mover as well as the seconder of the prposal to open an Oriental side to the University would indicate that in the deliberations of the Committee suggestions would be welcomed in aid of the discussion of two points viz. [...] The advantages derivable from the adotion of the proposed system such as the removal of all traces of cram (which is a great relief to the mind) the prevention of the neglect of vernacular study the preparation for creating a healthy Vernacular literature and thereby paving the way for social reform the spread of useful infomation among the masses &c. [...] To limit ourselves to the Madras University the -English language is given a prominent place in the field of liberal education and justly so considering that it is the language of the Rulers the language of the State the language perhaps most widely spoken in the world consequent on England's extensive poltical sway and influence throughout the world the language most expresSive of every [...] He next endeavours with a view to advancement in the study of the language to arouse more interest in the mind of the boy by connecting the words with objects—an object lesson which is but a continuation of that exercised by the mother on the linguistic faulty of the youth in the teaching of his mother-tongue.
