He arrived at this decision as he understood the expression to mean the 'Lord of the three Kalingas' and saw the impossibility of 'the kings of Kattack (Orissa) being the lords of a country streching from the mouth of the Ganges to the mouth of the Krishna particularly at a time when the Eastern Gangas were supreme in the region of the Mahendra mountain. [...] The real import of the name can be understood only by the study of the history of the kings of the several families that bore the title. [...] To the north-west of Svetak.a which is now marked by the Zamindaries of Surangi.Chikati and the south-eastern portion of China-Kimidy Zamindary and to the west of the hills of which Mahendra-giri is the highest peak lies a hill country which abutts on the west on Dakshina-Kosala which long before the time of which we are writing went under the sway. [...] Within the region beween the east coast and the Amarkantak hills were shown the Mekalas the Utkalas and the Kalingas who were respectively the Macco-Calingre Gangarades-Calingke and Calingm of Magesthenes: The Maikal range of the Vindhya mountains still bears evidence of the habitation of the Mekalas in that region. [...] Though the Amarkantak hills formed the western boundary of Kalinga in the Purani i tunas the political and tribal changes thtt had occured in latter tines gradually pl.tcad the Anyarakantak rozion under the sway of the kings of Chedi and the Eastern Gangas could subdue only the plain country from the tivr Nagavali in the south to the Chilka lake in the north.
