[...] At the same time she manifested herself not less inimical than the Porto itself to the claims of the Christian races so that England became popularly known as the enemy of the Christians and the friend of the Mussalmans. [...] This the Amir refused to do foreseeing that the admission of a British Envoy implied the admission of representatives of all the other Powers —a state of things which would be highly distasteful to Afghan national prejudices ; and hence followed the interruption of relations with England and the cultivation of the friendship of Russia including it is said the reception of a Russian Ambassador
