The Friend of India and Statesman Friday March 29th 1878

1878

The greatest excitement prevails on account of the sacred character of the Rajah and the victim as well as the horrible nature of the crime. [...] INDIAN EMIGRANTS TO MAURITIUS Ws see from a reply of the Colonial Secretary in the Renee of Commons the other day that the communications between his office and the Governor of the Mauritius on the subject of the treatment of natives of Iudia in that island is not yet complete. [...] On the other band we understand that the occupation of labouriug on a sugar plantation in the tropics is so distasteful that it is seldom followed except under some form of compulsiou and the fact that in the Mauritius the system has been adapted to the position of the newly-imported coolies who work under the penal contract must add rigour if not ignominy to the life of the labourer. [...] These proceedings led to the appointsned of the Commission and to the accumulation of irresistible evidence of the reality of the wrongs alleged to exist. [...] However it appears that on the date of the debate in the House of Lords the sketch of proposial reforms was on its way from the Mauritius and tee may assume that it came under the consideration of the Colonial Office.
