The case was appealed to the High Court and their lordships confirmed the sentence as regards the former and two of the latter the remaining two men receiving the benefit of a doubt which two of the Judges felt as to their identification. [...] The immediate procedure at Bareilly—one of the chief centres of the dreadful mortality that followed—was the adoption of the following resolution in Colonel Frasers' preseuce :- "Thu opinion of the meeting is that until the real position of the people be clearly known—which it cannot be for another mouth or six weeks—it will behest to doss the volts now its hand reserving however the projects enu [...] The passage that follows is too striking to be omitted :— That when the necessity for departing from the above rule of postponing the works should arise it should be the duty of the Collector first to satisfy his Boner the LieuteuaGuveraor through the Commissioner of Division in the General departmmt that the people in the neighbourhood of the work were in sorb a state of distress and star [...] it before no and the aspersions that it may cast on the memory of the deceased Ramgotti Biewas **** that report was never published until through some injudicious agitation of the friends or advisers of the petitioners a pressure was brought to bear on the Government which induced the latter to consent to the publication of that report in the expurgated form in which it has been laid before w [...] In this Lokenathoore case it is not the deep and bitter sense that a murderer has been protected in some way or other by our laws and the memory of the dead man aspersed—it is not the rankling of this memory in the minds of a whole district that does harm it is the injudicious agitation' of the dead mau's friends the injudicious agitation' of journalists like ourselves that does the mischie
