The closing of the Banks means of course the suspension of much of the business of the City ; yet the bankers do not even consult the 'merchants on the subject. [...] To grasp the results of this experience to ascertain in what particulars and subject to what limitations it is available for India and to bring it within the reach of the ignorant helpless masses who blindly till the soil of this vast Empire will be in our opinion among the most important of the many important tasks of the Famine Commissioners and upon the proper fulfilment of which so m [...] Robertson the Soperintendent of the Madras Experimental Farm of a tour which under the orders of Goverment he le ode through the district of Coitobat ore ins the spring of 1876 The district lies almost in the centre of the Madras Presidency to the south of Mysore. [...] We welcome the publication of this Resolution as the first unmistakable proof that Government is becoming aware of the gravity of our position and the stupendous difficulty before us of raising the statue of the peasantry of the country ; tor that is the task we have to achieve somehow and it will be for this Famine Commission to tell us how.
