THE course of the silver market for the last three years shows we think with reasonable certainty that the yield of the mines concerning which so much anxiety has been expressed would barelyhave kept pace with the wants of the world but for the ill-advised action of Germany in demonetizing the metal. [...] The late futile raid into the Bazaar Valley has opened the eyes of the authorities to the gigantic nature of the task involved in a thorough subjugation of the Afreedeee. [...] The Government is doing very great harm by propagating delusions upon the subject since they only defer the formation of a Bonne public opinion based upon the facts of the case The Times of India now writes :- Our military correspondent with the Quettah column writes :—" I have seen mention made in the papers of the 'great friendliness' of the people in Pishin and along our road. [...] The Home Government was guilty of the weakness and the sin of elevting Sir George Cooper to the governorship of 42 millions of people to gratify the sentimental fancies of the Prince of Wales. [...] Thus to flourish the occupation of Cyprus before the eyes of the London mob as the fruits and triumph of a spirited foreign policy the Ministry has come under secret engagements to France both as to Syria and Egypt and the Canal frustrating the object with which the shares in the latter were purchased by the nation and resigning all right of independent action towards the Khedive.
