It is the Crown only that can dismiss the Ministry and with the Court the aristocracy and the streets behind him we fear that the nation will see him attempt to carry on the Government in defiance of the Commons. [...] Th§ etchiSive right of the Commons to impose taxes and gratt the supplies for the due' payment of the establishments is the one safeguard of the national liberties. [...] The course which the Minister takes and which he declares it to be the rightful prerogative of the Crown to take is to commit the country to action from which it cannot draw back and then to appeal through the London Press to our patriotic feelings as Englishmen and to the fear of compromising the interests that are at stake for reticence and moderation on the part of the Opposition. [...] There are one or two other sentences of ill omen in the Times' letter :— " Convince the black man that riotory is always on the aide of the British flag in this way dispel their ideas of the invincibility of the Zulu army and the white man will establish his superiority in the native mind: To accomplish these ende we must guard against the chance of the slightest reverse at the band of our enem [...] " Our farmers tell us" says the Mercury " to look for the cause in the health of the sheep and the inability of the country to sustain the old numbers." The writer goes on to say " that as a change is coming over the country slowly and almost imperceptibly it will be better to try a new industry instead of letting things elide until.misfortune is at the door.
