THE most important news of the week is that letters have been received from Yakoob Khan announcing the death of the Amir and containing overtures for the renewal of friendly relations with the British Government. [...] We justify that step on the alleged ground of the mobility of the Boers to cope with their enemies and the danger that might have arisen not only to them but to our own colonies from a great up-rising of the Zulu tribes against the white man. [...] Upon those 6 650 is laid the task of supporting the State by the produce of their farms and upon them also rests the military duty of defending the country or fighting for its rights." Now it seems that the party who desired British annexation belonged chiefly to the dwellers in towns and villages and the floating population of gold-diggers who together amounted to only 1 250 in number. [...] The proper time for fraud is when papers are about to be emit to the long repose of the record-room ; and the collusion of the record-keeper is an indispensable condition of success. [...] The question propounded was no lees than—whether the editor of the Al Jarrbib Was a Itlitssulinalt or a Kaffir ; and the reason of the doubt was the fact that while the names of klussulnian agents of the newspaper in India and elsewhere are printed without any honorific titles the name of Dr.
