The object of the expedition was to demonstrate the practicability of the north-east passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean ; and Professor Nordenschild's log-book seems to prove that the route really is open for several months of the year to fast steamers properly equipped. [...] The Vega is remarkable neither for speed nor size : she left the mouth of the Yenisei on the 7th August doubled Cape Chelioskin (the northern-most point of Asia) on the 19th reached the mouth of the Lena on the 27th and on the 28th September she had come to a stop at the mouth of Behring's Straits. [...] The signifcance of this result consists in the fact that the greater fall is towards the Aral so that any diversion of the river in the direction of the Caspian must be purely artificial. [...] THE announcement that the House of Commons has given a vote imfavour of the addition to the English Cabinet of a Minister of Commerce and Agriculture may help the public in this country to realise the retrogressive nature of the step which the Government of India has just taken in abolishine. [...] The mills would deliver the good into the charge of the manager and the buyers would have to inspect the bags and cloth within a certain speoified time the rejectione.being again handed over to the respective mills and the goods that have been passed screwed into bales by the Company.
