Of this crusading spirit the writer proceeds to quote a few examples ; such as the formation of a society under the auspices of the wife Of the Grand Duke Michael in the Caucasian provinces for the encouragement of missionary labours among the Alussalmans of that region ; an attempt lately made by the Russian authorities of Derbend to turn an ancient mosque of that city into a church ; and a la [...] AnglIndian public opinion in the Presidency towns is well iuforinel and intelligent on the state of trade and the condition of the money market ; on the subject of the weather its authority is even more unimpeachable ; it knows all about the latest frailty of the Viceroy or the Lieutenant-Governor—what Venus is at any moment making her transit across the sun's disc and also what other planets [...] It was not without good cause we are sure that the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce the other day warned the Government that the long enduring trust of the people of this country in the good faith of the British Government was imperilled by the proceedings of the present administration. [...] That is not Imperialism which leaves an ancient people to the caprice of secretaries and the venality of clerks ; that is rather a degradation of the ruler as much as of the ruled and it is also the most direct preparation for the loss of Empire." There are doubtless detached expressions nod clauses hero which may be taken exception to and used to discredit the authority of the writer. [...] The Prince-Governor wished to relieve the pressure of high prices by the familiar Oriental expedient of compelling the holders of grain to part with a certain portion of their stocks to the bakers at a rate to be fixed by the Goverment.
