The scarcity of the last crop has been aggravated by the ravages of inundation the present excessive rains in various parts of the country having raised the rivers of the Eastern portion of the Gangetic Delta to an abnormally high point and whole districts have been swamped. [...] It is unnecessary to raise any discussion as to the general purposes of a University education ; it is sufficient to note that the University of Calcutta aims at the advancement of learning " through the study of certain prescribed courses and that the test of the study of these courses is the ability of the student to pass the prescribed examinations. [...] As education in the middle and higher English schools. advanced it was inevitable that the students should - at an earlier age reach the limit of the course prescribed for the Entrance examination and thus the regulation would operate prejudicially to the interests of the pupils and the discipline of the schools.
