623 the creation of a body of medical native women who taking the place of the superstitious and ignorant daees —the cause of the high death-rate in childbirth in India —shall be distributed over the country as village practitioners ; for this is in truth the position occupied by these daees who are the medical advisers generally in the zenanas; and they know less perhaps of medicine than o [...] The Chairman referred then to the subject of the lecture remaring that it must often have occurred to many present how sad it was to think of the number of great men of the world who had died apparently alone and with all the circustances of failure around them. [...] suppress idolatry and the rite of Suttee and his constant zealous advocacy of whatever tended to advance the glory of God and the welfare of man live in the grateful remembrance of his countrymen. [...] and that the God worshipped by the ancient Hindus was really the same as the God of the Old Testament the God of the New Testament the God of the Koran. [...] The secret of getting him to work to the utmost of his power lies in treating him with the courtesy the consideration and the sympathy which are due to educated gentlemen.
