The Indian tradition was obviously based On a thorough apprehension of the facts — the original kinship of the Indian and the Iranian peoples the original identity of the Indian and the Iranian faiths the divarication that split the Indo-Iranian people into two branches and the length of time required for the divarication to grow into a gaping division. [...] Megathenes has narrated a legend which is in truth the tradition of both the Indian and the Iranian peoples in regard to the parting of the Indo-Iranian peoples about 6777 B. C. ; the Aryanisation of India and Iran under Soma and Zarathushtra respectively and the duration of the dynasties of Indian kings in the line of S6ma. [...] The Indians of the days of Megasthenes are thus found to have had a thorough knowledge of the racial affinities of the Indian and the Iranian branches of the Aryans and of the identity of the beliefs and the ritual of the two branches when they were parting from one another —a knowledge which having been lost among the learned in India for centuries was rediscovered about a century back by the l [...] It included amongst other countries the Pandya the Kerala the COla the Maharastra the Mihisika the Kalinga the Paunika the Maunika the Aimaka and the Kuntala or Karnata. [...] Thus once the problem of the boundaries of Maharastra is settled the statement of the author of the Kavirajamarga becomes clearer namely that the boundaries of Karnataka stretched from the banks of the river Godavari down to those of the holy Kaveri.
