Nachiketa asked as the third boon the knowledge about the immortality of the Soul and the nature of the Soul. [...] The second is Tapas ( austerity ) which consists of the life of the Vanaprastha ( the anchorite ) and the Sannyasi ( the ascetic ). The third is the life of scriptural study or Brahmachary a. These persons attain the blessed worlds above. [...] It is most tolerant towards all and the peculiarity of it is that it contains all grades and types of minds from the gross materialist and atheist through the agnostic the egoist the hedonist and the altruist to the highest metaphysician and the great philosopher. [...] Does not the pious catholic Christian worship the image of the Virgin Mary and Christ ? Is it the marble that he worships or the divinity of which it is symbolic ? Or again does the Buddhist worship the Buddha or the supreme ideal of which it is symbolic ? There is the difficulty of the symbol worship being dragged down to a lower level. [...] These ten are the ten crimes against the Name in the practice of Japa of the names of Bhagavan Siva and Vinu." He who practises Japa of the Divine Name without taking precaution against the commission of the ten crimes stated above does not at all understand the very secret of the Name.
