THE POULTRY INDUSTRY AND THE WAR THE winning of modern wars does not depend solely on the efficiency of the actual fighting forces for these alone cannot succeed without the full cooperation of the entire civilian population. [...] Though the injury to the mature cane seldom proves fatal the damage done is none the less important as in a number of cases the attacked plants produce shoots from the eyes near the tops thus forming bunchy tops '. These top-branches develop at the cost of the main stem and after a very short period deterioration of the sucroscontent also sets in. [...] The effectiveness of any particular method of insect control is dependent not merely on the efficacy of the method itself but on the simultaneous application of the selected method over the whole of the infested area. [...] The control mainly cosisted of hand-picking of moths and hancrushing of egg-clusters and the removal of dead-hearts along with the borers inside by cutting the affected shoots close to the ground at the time of hoeing their crops. [...] Technique similar to that of 1935-36 was followed for recording the population of the pests at the beginning and at the end of the season.
