Indian Farming. March 1942

1942

Since the oubieak of the present war the export trade decreased partly owing to the difficulty of obtaining shipping space and partly owing to the demand of the Defence Services for suplies of blankets for the troops. [...] The needs of the Defence Services are not of course confined to blankets but include a number of articles of the worsted and hosiery trades and for these the fleeces of most Indian sheep which contain a percentage of hair fibres are not suitable. [...] Apart from the question of the continued avaiability of wool supplies from Australia it is obvious that with the resources India possesses in sheep and pastures the improvement of the quality and quantity of wool is necessary. [...] A scheme has recently been approved by the Advisory Board for the establishment of village shearing and grading centres in the North-West Frontier Province in order to demonstrate to and poplarize among the village sheep-breeders the importance of washing sheep before clipping and of improved methods of shearing and classification of wool. [...] Of course it is evident that as perhaps half the evaporation losses occurred after the end of rabi irrigation the policy that would make the best use of the water would be to empty the tank by that time.
