Indian Farming April 1945

1945

A Technical Sub-Committee was set up to examine the present programme of work at the Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology Cawnpore which is being placed under the Committee and to make recommendations to the next meeting in regard to the lines along which the Institute can best serve the needs of the sugar manufacturing industry. [...] The Comittee also had before it the results of a survey recently completed by the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research of the existing position of the various aspects of agricultural research on sugarcane which the Council has been financing for the last decade. [...] i Investigations of this nature have been carried out at Lyallpur Nagpur and Jhansi and the results so far obtained have confirmed the observation of the British workers that the frequent cutting or grazing has the effect of lengthening the most nutrtious period of the life of the herbage. [...] Some of the low lying lands and khals in the abad areas of the Sunderbans have been converted into salt-water fish farms into which fry and young fish are taken from the adjoining rivers during suitable tides and cultured for a year or two according to the nature of the fish or position of the bheri (farm). [...] The construction of dam and weirs for irrigtion and hydroelectric projects without adquate safeguards for the movements of migrtory fishes the pollution of streams through factory and municipal effluents and the destrution of young fish are the principal causes that have been responsible for the deterioration of riverine fisheries in India and elsewhere.
