the soil and the amount of nitrogen so fixed is in proportion to the yield and vigour of the legume crop the application of a phosphatic manure to those legfiples which can respond to it offers an effective means of adding nitrogen to the soil and of increasing soil fertility for cereal crop production on the one hand and the supply of valuable protein and phosphate-rich grain and fodder on the [...] In each of the three years of the experiment the growth of berseem under this treatment was invariably poor from germination onwards and the yield was below that of the no manure ' control ; the 3-years' average being only 87 per cent of the control. [...] In the case of wheat in the F-wheat series the effect of the kharif fallow has been to raise the yields in the lower phosphate treatment and to mask somewhat the effect of the higher doses of phosphate as disclosed in the more intesive C-wheat series. [...] Table 3 and graph 2 show that the phosphate contents of the hay prepared from berseem and cowpeas as well as that of the grain and straw of wheat are considerably higher in the phosphate-manured plots and that in berseem this increase is correlated with the increased doses of superphosphate applied to the crop. [...] His problem is the improvement of the existing simple equipment '. The limitation imposed by fostering the ideas of peasant ownership are well illustrated by comparing the various recommendations of the delegates The Agricultural Research Station at Rehouvat in Palestine has for its object the displacement of imports by making home products compete in the local market.
