Indian Farming September 1948

1948

It relates to the need of Government retaining power to examine the basis on which the owners of cold storage charge rent to the producer and the trader and to take steps from time to time to see that the rents are fair and reasonable and so designed as to popularize the method of cold storage in the interests of preservation of the country's food. [...] It is my hope that in settling the composition and powers of this Committee your recommendations while recognizing the interests of the Government the industrialists and the traders will not ignore the interests of our small producer and in a general sense of the people of the rural areas. [...] After all we hold power and we govern for the sake of and in the interests of the masses who so predominantly live in the villages and the problem of preserving food relates also largely to the rural areas where food is produced and where it remains for a good part of the year. [...] The calcium in the meal which is also mainly derived from the crushed bones of the fish in the preparation is in an easily digestible form and the digestibility of the proteins of fish and fish meals has been well-established. [...] In view of the prevailing high prices of the concentrates and the value of the meal as a feed it is high time that fish meal should be included in the food of the cattle setting aside the unfounded prejudices against its use.
