Most of the evil effects of what I have called the usurpation of the whole field are referrible to the capital evil that the passing of examinations has become an end in itself and the art of passing examinations a distinct art quite divorced from the objects or methods of soand education. [...] I might fairly have included the mischievous effects on the physique of the young which have undoubtedly resulted from the subordination of the proper objects of the educator to the exigencies: of the examination system. [...] THE following are the results of the Census of the 26th April 1891 arranged in Districts and into the four Educational Divisions compared with the figures of the Census of 1881 :— Total Population of both Sexes. [...] The error of the plan I have been speaking of seems to me to arise partly from the mistaken idea that the teaching of Latin and Greek in our schools is literature teaching; and partly from the endeavour to transfer the method used for Latin and Greek to the teaching of English without noticing that most of the conditions in the latter case are not the same. [...] One of the first and most important things then which call for our attention in literature-teaching is the introductory lesson or rather talk which is to prepare our pupils for the demands abouto be made On them ; the recalling and brightening up of the material already possessed and which is now needed the imparting of the fresh material required the glimpse at the kind of constrution
